Generations of Service

 

The Essex County Civic Club supports education, artistic and charitable causes and programs. We participate in programs that promote social justice and social causes. We are driven by a Four- Point program which includes, Education, Legislation, Economic Empowerment and Health & Welfare.

Some of our projects were the unveiling of a a free library in honor of our 1910 founder and support of the Boy Scout Free Library thru March of 2025. ECCC joined Bethany Baptist Church and The Urban League Guild of Essex County with a coat, hat, and gloves and book drive for Chancellor Avenue School (Newark, NJ). Other projects included Voter Registration, Donation of Feminine

Products for Columbia High School (Maplewood, NJ ) and Central Avenue School, (Newark, NJ ).; A bus ride to Hunterdon Hills Playhouse and a NJPAC Kwanza

Celebration.We also served desserts to Veterans during one of their meetings at The Maplewood Senior Citizens building, Maplewood, NJ.

Since the transition of former president Florence Johnson, We have created the Florence Johnson Scholarship which we give annually to a qualified and deserving student entering college. The ECCC is also proud of having submitted students' names to apply for the Gertrude Morris Cannon Scholarship which is funded by the New Jersey State Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, Inc. Also, The ECCC is proud to of having increased our membership

Scholarships.

 

Since the transition of former president Florence Johnson, we have proudly established the Florence Johnson Scholarship, an award that we present annually to a qualified and deserving student who is entering college.

The Essex County Civic Club (ECCC) is also very proud to have submitted the names of worthy students to apply for the Gertrude Morris Cannon Scholarship, which is generously funded by the New Jersey State Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, Inc. Additionally, the ECCC is pleased to report that we have successfully increased our membership, strengthening our community and expanding our collective impact.

Scholarship Requirements:

  1. Applicant must be single

  2. Applicant plans to a attend a four (4) year college or two (2) year college

  3. Applicant shows involvement in the following areas: school and community activities. Please note that GPA and SAT/ACT scores will be considered.

Your application must be accompanied by the following:

  1. An official copy of high school records/transcripts from applicant’s high school counselor

  2. Two letters of recommendations. One letter from the applicant’s high school counselor and the second letter from an individual not related to the applicant

  3. A copy of an acceptance letter from the college the applicant will be attending

  4. A typed, 300 word essay answering the following question: Why is the Florence Johnson Memorial Scholarship important to you?
