Community outreach

Education. Legislation.

Economic Empowerment. Health & Welfare.

The Essex County Civic Club is dedicated to supporting education, artistic endeavors, and various charitable causes and programs within our community. Our organization actively participates in initiatives that promote social justice and advocate for important social causes. We are guided by a comprehensive Four-Point program which encompasses Education, Legislation, Economic Empowerment, and Health & Welfare. Among our notable projects, we proudly unveiled a free library in honor of our founder from 1910, and we have continuously supported the Boy Scout Free Library through March of 2025.

In collaboration with Bethany Baptist Church and The Urban League Guild of Essex County, ECCC organized a coat, hat, gloves, and book drive specifically for Chancellor Avenue School in Newark, NJ. Additional efforts included voter registration campaigns and donations of feminine hygiene products to Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ, as well as Central Avenue School in Newark. We also arranged recreational outings such as a bus trip to Hunterdon Hills Playhouse and participated in the NJPAC Kwanzaa Celebration. Furthermore, we had the honor of serving desserts to veterans during one of their meetings at the Maplewood Senior Citizens building in Maplewood, NJ, fostering community connection and support.

Scholarships.

Since the transition of former president Florence Johnson, we have proudly established the Florence Johnson Scholarship, an award that we present annually to a qualified and deserving student who is entering college.

The Essex County Civic Club (ECCC) is also very proud to have submitted the names of worthy students to apply for the Gertrude Morris Cannon Scholarship, which is generously funded by the New Jersey State Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, Inc. Additionally, the ECCC is pleased to report that we have successfully increased our membership, strengthening our community and expanding our collective impact.
